Aim or vision of department area
At Upper Shirley High , we are committed to the idea of a global community. There has never been a more important time for young people to learn languages. Our aim is to demonstrate that the study of languages is important and relevant but also that through language, and cultural understanding as an explicit part of the curriculum, young people may be offered chances that previous generations have never had.Young people armed with knowledge of another language and empathy for other cultures are better equipped to enter the world of work in an ever evolving global community.
We aim to demonstrate that English is not, and never will be enough. Over 75% of the world doesn’t speak English as a first language, 70% of the world speaks no English at all and 60% of businesses in the UK lose business due to a lack of language expertise. We aim to broaden the minds of our young people and bring the world to the heart of our learning.
