Media and Film Studies Key Stage 4

There are currently two courses taught at this level within the department.

AQA GCSE Media
The GCSE Media course has just finished for this years’ Year 11 students with 50% coursework (research, planning, practical and analytical pieces including an original CD cover for music promotion, storyboard for a film, a website and magazine) and 50% examination on The Popular Press (sat on Tuesday 4th May 2010). We wish the students well with their summer results.

WJEC GCSE Film Studies
Introduced in 2009, students at USH are studying GCSE Film Studies, which allows them both a practical and institutional introduction to working in the Film Industry. The course is assessment by coursework and an examination. For the coursework, students choose their favourite film and look into the industrial makeup as well as analysising it. They then create a pitch for an original film, a review, create the actual film and then evaluate it. This will be directed, filmed and edited by the students.

The examination is spilt into two papers. Paper 1 explores film with the mainstream genre of Disaster Films, whilst Paper 2 concentrates upon texts ‘Outside of Hollywood’.
