Key Stage 4
All students receive 5 periods of Physical Education each fortnight. Students are advised on a programme of study which includes one of GCSE, BTEC and UK Leadership 1 course.
BTEC
The BTEC Certificate In Sport is a Level 2 qualification, equivalent to 2 GCSE's at grade A*-C.
The course has 3 subjects and is coursework based, meaning no end of year examinations.
The BTEC is aimed at more vocational learning and as such sets out tasks in a practical format and allows learners to continually improve their coursework levels in a portfolio basis.
The subjects running at USH are:
THE BODY IN SPORT
A science and physiology based subject, learners will explore the effects of exercise on the body, and how we can improve our fitness levels. Students take part in practical scientific experiments, testing their own results and analysing the results.
HEALTH, SAFETY AND INJURY
Learners in this unit will look into health and safety laws used for the sports industry, take part in risk assessment for sport and learn basic first aid.
PRACTICAL SPORT
In this unit pupils not only take part in a range of sports, but look to apply their knowledge of rules and laws of the game. Pupils will examine performance and analyse their and their opponents strengths and weaknesses.
Each lesson looks at working towards evidence for PASS criteria, equivalent to C grades at GCSE, and each unit has specific independent assignments which allow the pupils to progress towards MERIT (B at GCSE) and DISTINCTION (A-A* at GCSE) grades.
G.C.S.E.
G.C.S.E Physical Education is taught over 5 periods a fortnight. 60% of the course marks are awarded for effective performance and analysis of physical activities in four different activity areas. The other 40% of marks are gained through the written paper, which covers four sections.
