Welcome to Geography

Geography is a dynamic subject that is relevant to the 21st century and the world we live in.  It is a subject that not only teaches us about the natural and man-made Geography of the world, but also equips students with the key transferable skills that are needed when pupils leave school, such as communication, data analysis and problem solving skills.

Pupils at Upper Shirley High School study a wide range of topics in Geography.  The units that we study at Key Stage 3 include:

  • How do people cope with flood disaster?
  • Should the coastline be saved?
  • Global sport? - A study of the Geography of football and the 2012 Olympics.
  • How can settlements be sustainable?
  • Should the tropical rainforests be saved?
  • How do people cope with volcanoes and earthquakes?
  • Does global warming really matter?

Students also have the option to study GCSE Geography in years 10-11.  The GCSE covers areas such as living in slums, coping with droughts, the effects of hurricanes, global warming, and differences in trade between different countries.  For more information on the GCSE please see Mrs Fountain or Mrs Laybourne.
