What to expect in year 7:
Project 7.1 – Drawing Techniques (3 weeks)
The course will begin with basic drawing and designing skills. This will lead to the development of observational drawing skills and technical drawing skills. The pupils will be introduced to basic drawing and rendering techniques, including shading and texturing. At the end of the programme a pupil will be able to demonstrate skills in designing, drawing, rendering, and using shade to create tone and texture.
Aims.
1. To enhance drawing and design skills.
2. To develop an awareness and understanding of how to draw.
3. To develop skills in rendering an image using a variety of different media.
4. To understand the need to mix tone to create the various surface effects.
5. To develop an appreciation of work by artists and designers.
6. To provide the opportunity to experiment and develop an artistic style.
7. To introduce technical drawing aids and equipment.
Project 7.2 – School Design (6 weeks)
To introduce the new intake of pupils into the school they will experience several design tasks relating to the school and school life. They will follow a graphics course allowing the pupils to develop and build on their design and making skills. I will begin the term's topic by introducing simple graphics projects. They will begin the graphics theme by completing their timetables using symbols only. They will then be introduced to the design process and will focus on a design brief inviting them to design and construct a 'time machine and a class room of the future'. This will encourage the pupils to use their imaginations, see a design in their heads and reproducing the images on paper (in contrast with topic 7.1.1). This will include research elements, initial designs, and modelling techniques. This will group work that will build group identity and introduce them to designing to a set brief. The project includes scale drawing, three dimensional drawing and evaluation writing. At the end of the programme a pupil will be able to understand why corporate identity and logos are so important to firms, and have basic modelling, graphical, designing and drawing skills.
Aims.

2. To develop an understanding of the purpose of corporate images and logos.
3. To develop graphical skills in sketching, drawing, and rendering.
4. To introduce advanced graphical skills including drawing in three dimensions.
5. To develop skills in working to the design process.
6. To develop dimension drawing skills.
7. To introduce scale modelling skills in card.
8. To develop communication skills.
9. To develop skills in critically analysing their own work and detailing their decisions and opinions in an evaluation.
What to expect in year 8:
Project 8.1 – Structures (7 weeks)
I will introduce a project on structures to the class. The class will then be given a problem relating to the area, which they will solve in small groups. The problem will be how to construct a structure from straws to support a weight (half kilo bag of sugar) using knowledge and experience. The first structure they will create will be to see how high they dare go keeping in mind the ratio between strength/cost/height. The second structure will be created using the experience (and lessons learned) from the first tall structure. The second challenge will be to build a bridge from straws to span 300mm and hold at least half a kilogram. The project will be marked on the groups presentation at the completion of both tasks as well as how well their solution performs (how it looks, how much it costs, the weight at which it failed). Each straw will cost the group £1000 as will each 50mm length of tape and the groups expenditure will be recorded by the shop keeper (me!). At the end of this programme of activities a pupil will have an understanding of structures and forces, and will be able to use the skills acquired to solve design problems.

Project 8.2 - Prospectus
Topic Introduction and Development.
One project based around the theme of ‘School Prospectus'. The emphasis will be on a modern approach to designing and the generation and presentation of ideas using the computers and various software applications. The project will adhere to the design process and will be based around the theme. The pupils will design and produce a prospectus to heighten awareness of the school within the community. The emphasis of this project will be on the development of more advanced presentation techniques as well as introducing some basic computer graphic skills.

3. To develop graphic skills.
4. To promote safe working practices in a workshop environment.
5. To develop construction techniques.
6. To develop skills in presenting ideas.
7. To develop skills in marking out.
8. To develop skills in drawing to scale.
9. To develop an understanding of the uses of statistical representation.
10. To develop skills in presenting statistics.
11. To promote an awareness of designing to meet a real need.
12. To develop presentation techniques.
13. To develop skills in using Desk Top Publishing as a graphical aid.
14. To Prepare pupils for the rigors of the GCSE course in Graphics (and Resistant Materials).
Programme of lessons.
Introduce a graphics project on research, statistical representation and design to fulfill a given need. The pupils will be introduced to basic marketing, reproducing statistics in a graphical form and drawing skills including questionnaires. They will also explore desktop publishing and develop an understanding of applying graphical skills. The pupils will also be introduced to time plans and time management. They will produce a new design for the schools prospectus. The pupils will be set one of three tasks dependent upon their ability. Higher ability pupils (working towards NC level 8) will follow the design process to present a complete package aimed at both the adult and their children with effective graphical content displayed and advertised. Mid ability pupils (working towards NC level 6) will be expected to all that which is mentioned above however, they will not be expected to produce a complete campaign including the advertising and promotion of the product, they will aim their prospectus at the parent. Lower ability pupils will be expected to design the product and aim their prospectus solely at the prospective child. The project will last for one half a term. At the end of the programme a pupil will be able to understand why effective promotion and marketing is an important method to heighten awareness, and will be able to present information in various forms as well as improving basic presentation techniques.
What to expect in year 9:
Project 9.1 – Point of Sales Display Stand (12 weeks)
The pupils will be introduced to the 'minor' project to practice their skills and to develop new skills required to complete the course effectively (before beginning their 'major' project next year). The class will identify and contribute to a number of technological activities: investigation, design, plan, analysis, manufacture and evaluation. They will demonstrate skills by producing a display stand to promote a cosmetic brand of their choice (through investigation). The pupils will be working within a set brief that will impose size limitations to the artifact. The pupils will be use advanced drawing and presentation techniques. At the end of the programme a pupil will have an understanding of manufacturing techniques and be able to construct an effective product, which meets the design brief.

11. To further develop the ability to speak to a group and present an opinion.
