Newsletter 8th March 2010
Newsletters by email
Following some advice from parents we are setting up a system by which we will be able to email the newsletter to parents each week. Not all parents have provided an email address so if you have not yet given us this information please could you send it in to info@ushschool.org so that we can include you in the mailings.
I apologise that we keep asking for contact details but this is as a consequence of some parents not informing us when they change their contact numbers, leaving us fairly vulnerable.
Annual Swimming Gala, Wednesday 3rd March
The PE department took just over 40 students from Years 7-9 for our annual swimming gala event at the Quays swimming complex. As in previous years, the event was run as a competitive inter house competition. The students took part in races over either 25m or 50m and the strokes used included front crawl, back stroke and breaststroke with relays at the end.
The quality of swimming on show was very good and we all agreed that the standard this year was the best we have had for a few years. There were several exceptional performances including ones from Benedict Gardner, Emma Crawley and Luke Grech (year 7), Lewis Foreman and Sophie Isigollu (Year 8) and Bradley Whitehead (Year 9).
After all of the races were completed, the results were added up and the results were as follows:
Engineers 1st, Aviators 2nd, Mariners 3rd and Venturers 4th.
The afternoon ended with the now world famous ‘staff race’ which this year featured 3 teams, each consisting of 2 members of the PE staff racing over 50m. Mr Hadfield teamed up with Mr Wilding, Miss Sidney with Miss Gallant, and Mr Hall with Mr Staples. Sadly the standard of swimming was not quite as good in this race (especially from Mr Hall and Mr Staples) and Mr H and Mr W ended up as winners! It’s the taking part that counts though………

Visit of Buddhist Monk
On Thursday 25th February students in Year 9 had the opportunity to meet a Buddhist Monk. Gen Tharpa from the Thekchen Buddhist Centre in Bitterne came to talk to them about why he became a monk and how this has affected his life. The students have been learning about Buddhism in their RE lessons and this was a fantastic opportunity for them to ask questions and develop their understanding of the topic. Both Gen Tharpa and his colleague Avril, a lay Buddhist, said how impressed they were with our students and the quality of questions. A big thank-you to all involved.

Year 7 Trip to Woodmill
Eleven children from Year 7 went to Woodmill Activity Centre recently to enjoy a well earned reward trip. They had a go at crate challenge and the climbing wall, despite the sporadic weather. All the students did a great job, had a lot of fun and really challenged themselves throughout the day.
Sports Results
The Year 8 netball team have had an outstanding season, and continued their success this side of Christmas with 6 consecutive wins!
- 8-0 v Woodlands
- 3-1 v Bitterne Park
- 7-5 v Regents Park
- 5-4 v Oasis Lordshill
- 10-1 v Sholing
- 2-1 v Sholing (Year 9 team)
Well done to all girls involved (Ellie Clement, Rosie Davis, Louisa Halliwell, Charlotte Jewell, Shannon Jewell, Dani Mattingly, Kate Ramsden, Emily Stone and Joanna Thaxter).
News of Former Students
Joey Parker, now a BTEC Performing Arts Award student at Tauntons College, took part in an improvised set of performances on student sexual health issues and said, “Playing the role of a young man out drinking with his mates and boasting about his experiences with girls was a useful experience as it counted towards the assessment for my improvisation unit”.
Luke Thaxter was part of a Tauntons team who finished 5th out of 20 Hampshire schools and colleges in a Maths Challenge held at Intech in Winchester, after competing in 3 very challenging rounds of maths puzzles.
