Upper Shirley High

Admissions Policy for September 2011/12

The Governors at Upper Shirley High will admit 150 students to Year 7 in 2011/12. Applications should be made in the normal way to the Admissions Team at Southampton City Council, under the Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme, using the ST1 form available from Primary Schools, SCC or on-line. Applications should NOT be forwarded directly to the school. The closing date for applications is 31st October 2010 and parents will be notified by the Local Authority of places on 1st March 2011 (or the first working day thereafter). In the case of fraudulent information being supplied, any place offered will be withdrawn.

Children with statements of special educational needs (SEN) that name the school

Children with statements of special educational needs that name Upper Shirley High will be admitted with regard to the SEN Code of Practice. These children will count toward the admission number.

Oversubscription criteria

Applications received by 31st October 2010 will be dealt with first. If the number of applications received by this date is greater than the admission number, admissions will be decided according to the following priorities:

1.   Children in public care (looked after children).

2.   Children who attend one of our partnership schools within the Upper Shirley
Learning Community namely Shirley Junior or Hollybrook Junior.

3.   Children who live closest to the school based on the shortest practicable walking
distance. Distance from home to school will be measured by public roads and
footpaths, from the point where the applicant’s home meets the public highway to
the entrance gate to the school site. Should parental responsibility be equally
shared, the home address will be considered to be that of the parent/carer who
receives the relevant Child Benefit allowance. Should there be two or more
identical distances requiring prioritisation, this will be done by casting lots.

4.      Children who have a sibling already on the roll of the school who will continue to attend that school during 2011/12.  A sibling is a brother or sister, including half or step brother or sister living at the same address within the same family unit.

If the school becomes oversubscribed in any of the above criteria then the subsequent criteria will be used.

Late applications

If the school has places available after admitting all on-time applications, late applications will be considered in accordance with the priorities set out above.

Waiting lists

After the initial allocation of all available places, the Governing Body will maintain a waiting list of applicants until 31st August 2011. If parents wish their child’s name to remain on the list after this time they should contact the school in writing before this date otherwise their name will be removed on 1st September 2011. Applicants will be placed on the list in accordance with the criteria listed above and places will be offered in that sequence as and when they become available. Should a vacancy occur, a place will be offered in strict order of priority and will be held open for a maximum period of ten school days from the date of the offer.

Appeals

Parents whose child is refused a place at Upper Shirley High have a right of appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel in accordance with Section 94 of the Schools Standards and Framework Act 1998. Parents should write to the Chair of Governors within 15 school days of the refusal letter.

Open Evening/Visits

Parents are welcome to visit the school at any time by appointment. There will, however, be an Open Evening on Wednesday, 6th October 2010 followed by an Open Fortnight where parents will be able to see the school in action during the working day.
